6 Reasons Your Dog Needs an Interactive Dog Toy

In many ways, dogs are just like human children.  They require mental stimulation, quality time with a “parent,” and can be destructive when bored.  Interactive dog toys, which force a dog to solve a puzzle in order to earn a reward, can provide all of the above mentioned needs. Interactive dog toys come in many sizes, shapes, and difficulty levels.  Perhaps the first and most well known interactive toy is the KONG, which forces dogs to figure out how to get all of the cheese, peanut butter, or kibble out of the rubberized toy.  A more difficult toy may hide treats in compartments that the dog must figure out how to open in order to find the tasty reward.  No matter your dog’s skill level, there is sure to be a toy that fits his or her needs. Mental Stimulation Dogs require mental stimulation throughout their day in order to...

The Cost of Owning a Dog; Can You Afford It?

When I adopted my first dog, I was ecstatic to find that he was free to a good home.  He was being given away to anyone who could give him the exercise and training he needed as well as care for him on a daily basis.  No problem, I thought. Two meals a day, a bowl of water and a collar and leash and he would be just fine and dandy! How hard could it be to keep up with his care?  I learned the hard way. Like us on Facebook and let everyone know, I Heart Dogs! Even if your dog is free initially, there are costs that will very shortly follow your decision to adopt him.  Vet care needs to be provided within 3 days of bringing home a new puppy.  This includes a fecal exam to check for parasites, worming medication, vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention...

Keeping The Dog Off The Bed

Does your dog sleep in your bed or take your spot when you get up in the middle of the night? Some people do not mind their dog sleeping in bed with them, others hate it but can’t keep them off. In our case, we do not mind Rosco sleeping with us but like him down by our feet. A 100+ pound dog doesn’t belong between us! No matter if you mind it or not, I suggest training your dog so that he knows that your bed is not always his bed. When not trained, a dog looks at your bed as your den, the place you all cuddle and sleep. For my wife and I, it is also the place where our dog thought he had the right to take anyplace on the bed he wanted which usually ended up being the warm spot we got up from to...

Do’s and Don’ts for Dog Owners: Lessons Learned the Hard Way

As a dog owner, I look back to my childhood in horror and cannot believe what awful dog owners my parents were.  I know that sounds harsh, but the level of pet-parenting dogs receive today is vastly different than it was 20 – 30 years ago.  Today I am what might be called an over-protective pet parent, but I am probably this way due to years of learning from my parents’ mistakes.  Here are my top do’s and don’ts for dog owners, gathered from my own experiences growing up. Don’t Assume All Dog Breeds are the Same Before I was born, my parents had only ever owned purebred cocker spaniels.  Until I had a spaniel of my own, I never understood why my parents thought dogs didn’t need training or exercise [note:  I do not recommend not training or not exercising a spaniel; rather, some dog breeds just happen to...

Product Review: Harness Lead

Leash pulling, harness escaping, and fears of your dog’s leash becoming detached from the collar or harness are all common problems.  Here, the Harness Lead will be reviewed, which overcomes many of these issues. The Harness Lead is an intuitively designed product made from a single piece of exceptionally strong, woven nylon that can withstand up to 37,000 lbs of pressure.  This product is designed to wrap around the dog’s chest in order to eliminate choking and gagging that occur when pressure is applied to the trachea, such as with traditional no-pull products.  The Harness Lead applies pressure based on your dog’s movements, ensuring you never have to violently correct your dog.  Additionally, since the Harness Lead is comprised of one single piece of rope, you never have to worry again about a leash malfunction. The Harness Lead is a great product for anyone whose dog pulls.  Best yet, the...

Can I Feed Bones To My Dog?

Dogs and bones seemingly go together like peanut butter and jelly; but, are bones really a healthy snack for our dogs?  A growing number of veterinarians are warning pet owners to avoid giving their pets bones as treats due to the potentially harmful implications they have for sensitive digestive tracts.  Listed below are the many types of bones available to dogs and whether or not they are safe. Cooked Bones Cooked bones, particularly poultry bones, are never recommended for a dog because they become brittle during the cooking process, leading to an increased chance of splintering.  Bone fragments cause numerous issues for dogs, including abrasions in the mouth and throat, vomiting, intestinal obstruction, constipation, diarrhea, and perforations in the intestinal tract, which can be deadly.   Rawhide Bones A common treat for a dog is the rawhide bone, which can be purchased at any pet store and is comprised of...

Food Bowl? Throw It To The Dogs!

Imagine this scenario: a first time dog owner is about to buy all the things his new puppy will need. He gets a doggy bed, a leash and a collar, some toys, a bag of dog food, a water bowl and… a food bowl.  This is the very first mistake people do. We don’t need food bowls and we certainly shouldn’t be using them. If your dog is eating from one of these horrible objects, throw it away! Confused? Let me explain. The dog’s ancestor spent most of his day scavenging and searching for food. When we look at animals in their natural habitat, we see that food-related activities tend to occupy a considerable amount of their time. When it comes to dogs, they’re not so different. According to some studies, when given the opportunity, most dogs will choose to work for their food instead of getting it all for...

Dog Sweaters: Finding the Perfect Apparel for Your Pup

Fashion is something that we tend to only think about when it comes to people, but what about our dogs? Many of us think of our furry friends as family members, so it’s natural that we’d want them to be warm, comfortable, and stylish when they’re out and about with us. It’s also a fact that many of our doggie friends need some extra insulation when it comes to keeping warm. Short haired breeds like Pinschers or Bulldogs certainly may need the warmth and coziness that a sweater provides, but senior dogs or those with health conditions like Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism or allergic dermatitis might have issues with thinning hair too, making an extra layer a necessity for warmth and comfort. So how do you go about finding the perfect pullover for your pup? The two main things to consider are fit and fabric. A good sweater should fit your...
