Product Review: Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement

Probiotics are becoming a common word in our vocabulary, thanks to important research that has been done on gut health.  Foods like yogurt, kefir, kombucha, and fermented vegetables are becoming increasingly popular, thanks to their high probiotic content.  Just as humans can benefit from improved gut health, so can dogs.  Here, Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement will be reviewed.

Purina Foriflora Nutritional Supplement contains vitamins and minerals, as well as Enterococcus faecium, which is a common probiotic found in both human and animal supplements.  This probiotic is intended to be fed once per day, and is a powder sprinkled over a dog’s food.  The ingredients are:  animal digest, Enterococcus faecium, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate, Brewers Dried Yeast, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Proteinate, Beta-Carotene, Salt, Manganese Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Iodate, and Sodium Selenite.

The Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement is intended for dogs who have suffered (or are currently suffering) from diarrhea and have depleted the beneficial bacteria in their digestive systems.  Recently, our 14 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix was prescribed 14 days of Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement in addition to antibiotics to assist in overcoming a 4-day period of diarrhea that left her weak and dehydrated.  The powder was easy to add to her food and there were no issues encouraging her to consume the supplement.  Since taking the supplement, she has completely returned to normal.

There are no limitations to this product; however, there is some controversy regarding the first ingredient:  animal digest.  According to Purina, animal digest is an animal protein made from soft tissue and muscle that is supplied by USDA-inspected facilities, such as slaughter houses.  The primary purpose of animal digest is to improve palatability of the product, provide high-quality protein, and further support intestinal and immune health.  However, some people suggest that Purina should state the animal digest itself is USDA-inspected, and they claim that the ingredient could technically come from non-slaughtered animals, such as those that have been euthanized.  Despite the fact that obtaining animal digest in this manner would be illegal (the meat would therefore be tainted by pentobarbital), the controversy still exists over this veterinarian recommended product.

Regardless of these concerns, the fact remains that Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement is a highly recommended product for dogs and puppies that have suffered from diarrhea.  The product is rated as a “#1 Best-Seller on Amazon,” and has a 4.7 star rating, out of 3,261 reviews.

Similar products include Crafton’s Pet Naturals Probiotic and Prebiotic Supplement, WetNozeHealth Probiotics for Dogs, and Hyperbiotics PRO-Pets Probiotics for Dos and Cats.  Each of these products does not contain the controversial ingredient of animal digest; however, Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement is the number one veterinarian recommend probiotic supplement for dogs with diarrhea.

Ultimately, Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement is a powdered probiotic, vitamin, and mineral supplement which supports digestive and immune health for dogs whose beneficial gut bacteria has been stripped due to diarrhea.  This product is simple to use, and is backed by both veterinarians and verified customers.
