Choosing The Right Shampoo For Your Dog

Bathing your dog is already a stressful event, but it can be made worse by using the wrong kind of shampoo or wash to clean his coat and skin. Some shampoos are medicated, others have pesticides to kill fleas or ticks that can be dangerous for some pets. Others, meanwhile, are meant to hydrate skin or make white coats whiter. If all you want is a clean pet, why do these different shampoos matter? You’re about to find out!

Dry Skin

Dry skin is uncomfortable for humans, but it can become downright painful for pets. Dogs are meant to have a natural oil covering their skin and coat. This oil is what makes their coats glisten and their skin soft. Drying them out with the wrong shampoo can make an itchy pet bite into his skin causing infections or even hot spots. Hot spots are sore, irritated patches of skin that often times ooze or bleed.

Dry skin prevention is easy enough with simple, safe and natural shampoos or washes that can be found on the market. Some are made with milk protein that is healthy for most fur while others use honey and oatmeal. All of these are wonderful for both prevention and treatment of dry skin!

Medicated Shampoos

Medicated shampoo for dogs is aimed more at dogs with allergies, hot spots or other conditions. Don’t use a medicated shampoo unless your dog truly needs it! Some may be as simple as using tea tree oil to combat a fungal infection while others may have something more harsh meant to clear up mange or a yeast infection on the skin. Using medicated shampoo when your dog does not need it may make him uncomfortable or it could even damage his coat!

Puppy Shampoos

These types of soaps, conditioners and washes aimed at puppies are typically safe and work well for adult dogs as well. Puppy shampoos, much like human child shampoos, are painless if they get into your little one’s eyes. It helps to create a safe and enjoyable bath time instead of one full of pain and fear.

While puppy shampoos are safe and usable on adults, they may not be as strong as other cleaners on his coat if he is really dirty.

Human Shampoos on Dogs

Many people want to avoid the cost of buying shampoo for their pet so they opt to use their own. There are many reasons why this is a bad idea, and one is that shampoos and washes marketed for dogs has been pH balanced for a dog’s skin and coat. Human shampoo is balanced for humans only, and it will dry out your dog’s skin and coat beyond belief! Additionally, some are even toxic to dogs and can cause reactions. Keep your dog safe and use doggy shampoos only! I suggest reading my post called Can You Use Human Shampoo on Dogs.
