Product Review: Outward Hound Interactive Toys

Interactive toys are a great way to keep active and curious pets from being bored.  They can be used on rainy days, when the owner is away from home, or during times when your dog needs to be occupied.  Here, three Outward Hound interactive toys will be reviewed. Outward Hound Treat Chaser Treat Ball The first of the Outward Hound interactive toys is the Treat Chaser Ball, which is perfect for a puppy or young dog.  Treats are placed in the ball, which has two small slots.  The dog must figure out how to roll the ball in order for the treats to fall out.  For dogs that eat their meals too quickly or require extra mental stimulation, breakfast or dinner can be placed in the ball (up to ~1.5 cups of kibble). Product Review: KONG Comfort Control Grip Harness

In a previous post the Harness Lead, a no-pull harness that places pressure behind a dog’s shoulders when he or she pulls on the leash, was reviewed.  While this harness is great for every-day use, there are certain instances when it is not appropriate, such as travel and when your dog joins you for a run.  For these situations, the KONG Comfort Control Grip Harness is preferred, which will be described here. Product Review: Kyjen Slo Bowl

Slow bowls are dog dishes that force a dog to eat more slowly in order to avoid upset stomach and gastric torsion (bloat).  Here, the Kyjen Slo Bowl will be reviewed. I first purchased a Kyjen Slo Bowl in 2014 for my dog, Sadie, who is a 30 lb beagle/chow mix.  Prior to purchasing the bowl, we had started fostering dogs.  What we did not know at the time was that when other dogs are present, Sadie will inhale her food and throw up 10 – 15 minutes later.  I was concerned she would eat too quickly and develop bloat.  The vet, on the other hand, was concerned that throwing up regularly was causing her to have a few digestive issues.  Our veterinarian strongly recommended we find a slow bowl. Why I Chose The Slo Bowl I chose the Kyjen Slo Bowl because of the value, as well as the...

Safe Use of a Martingale Collar

The martingale, which is often referred to as the “humane choke chain,” is a great training tool when used appropriately.  Best known as being used on greyhounds that are prone to slipping out of collars, thanks to necks that are significantly wider than their heads, these collars are also great for dogs that routinely escape collars or harnesses.  There are certain precautions that pet owners should take, however, when finding the right martingale dog collar for their needs. What is a Martingale? A martingale collar is composed of two loops:  one large loop, which goes around the dog’s head, and a second smaller loop, which attaches to the leash.  When pressure is applied to the leash, the smaller loop will tighten the larger loop, placing pressure on the dog’s neck.  This method is considered more humane than a typical choke chain because the wide fabric ensures that pressure is more...
